starbucks

We have been lucky to do a lot of different projects for Starbucks! Everyone knows Starbucks and has a personal Starbucks story, we like to tell those.

Starbucks projects

From designing specific artwork for high-end stores, to artwork guides for the design-team and a brochure highlighting their latest EMEA Drive Thru program. Their mission statement is “to inspire and nurture the human spirit – one person, one cup and one neighbourhood at a time.” Thats what we kept in mind whilst working on these projects.

flagship store johannesburg

The store design of the very first Starbucks store in South Africa, is based on combining Starbucks coffee culture with the rich local art and craft in a modern way. The store has been constructed and built with local craftsmen and designers for the lighting and wooden furniture.

The ceiling is based on how the beans are organised and raked on the fields. It is made out of Felt to give the space more dimension and better acoustics. The store serves Starbucks Reserve Coffee which is a premium selection of carefully sourced coffees from smaller farms all over the world.

As Africa has a rich coffee culture and a lot of knowledge about coffee, we focussed our storytelling for this store purely on the history of Starbucks. The logo originated form the story of a two-tailed mermaid which ties into the early coffee trade between Africa and Europe being transported by boat.

We designed a pattern influenced by local patterns and the story we are telling, which got it executed in wood by local craftsmen. I collaborated with local artist Kurt Pio for part of the artwork.. He designed and applied a big mermaid with sea-like hair, to reinforce the story and bring even more life and character to the wooden wall.

express store canary wharf london

To follow the digital innovations Starbucks has rolled out to improve convenience for customers, the first express store in Europe opens at London’s major business hub, Canary Wharf.

Designed for people on-the-go who want Starbucks products, coupled with the efficiency that comes from knowing what they want. The express stores cater specifically for customers who choose to order and pay ahead, to use this store only as a pick-up point.

With an open layout, the new store features a walk-through experience and a streamlined menu at an early order point which allows customers to order, pay and pick-up even faster. The store offers a welcoming environment with the barista and customer at its heart. Design features include textures of complementary natural wood and marble.

For this store we kept branding very minimal, one of the goals I set myself whilst working for Starbucks EMEA. This expressed itself, by showing not the traditional logo but a big green dot, at the centre of the store and no further artwork within the store.

The green dot is build up out of five different layers of green glass, executed to perfection by IGMA.

We created a brochure, explaining the new Starbucks Drive Thru concept to their partners.

The Starbucks Drive thru is all about movement and speed, whilst still enjoying the Starbucks quality & experience. We used the iconic green dot from the Starbucks logo in our design, but in a more fluent way.

the pavilion store Schiphol airport

The Pavilion store will immerse customers in the world of coffee and offers a 360-degree view of the surrounding lounge and onto the runway.

It is the largest Starbucks airport store in the EMEA region and the displayed Starbucks wordmark, made out of woven black steel wire and green leather sleeves , is the largest in the world. We created this wordmark by looking at the exquisite typography designs, of Dutch design master Wim Crouwel.

The store has many unique design aspects including the ceiling which is reminiscent of the Dutch polder landscape, visible while flying in and out of Schiphol. Inspired by Amsterdam’s diamond industry, the ‘bean wall’ showcases the world’s most rare and exquisite coffees where the Starbucks Reserve coffee beans are displayed like precious jewels.
